Ubaidullah bin Abdullah narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to narrate: Once a man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He said: O Messenger of Allah! Last night I saw a cloud from which ghee and honey were raining down, and people were taking it in their hands. Some people were taking more, and some were taking less. Then I saw a rope hanging from the sky to the earth. Then I saw you, that you held it and ascended upwards. After you, a man held it and he also went up. Then another man held it and he also went up. Then another man held it, but the rope broke. Then it was joined for that man, so he also went up. (The narrator says) Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! May my father be sacrificed for you. By Allah! Give me permission so that I may interpret it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: You interpret it! So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The cloud means the cloud of Islam, and the ghee and honey dripping from it (means) the Qur'an. Its sweetness and softness are meant. As for people taking it in their hands, some people acquire more knowledge of the Qur'an and some acquire less knowledge of it. As for the rope hanging down from the sky, it is the truth upon which you are established. You held it, so Allah Almighty granted you elevation. Then after you, a man held it, so he attained elevation through it. Then another man held it, so he attained elevation through it. Then another man held it, but the rope was severed. Then it was joined for that man, so he also attained elevation. O Messenger of Allah! Tell me. May my father be sacrificed for you, have I interpreted it correctly or incorrectly? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: You have interpreted some of it incorrectly, and some of it correctly. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! O Messenger of Allah! Tell me where I made a mistake? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Do not swear."
