أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حِبَّانُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي صَدَقَةُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ ، عَنْ عَقِيلِ بْنِ جَابِرٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَزْوَةِ ذَاتِ الرِّقَاعِ ، أَصَابَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ امْرَأَةَ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَافِلا أَتَى زَوْجُهَا وَكَانَ غَائِبًا ، فَلَمَّا أُخْبِرَ حَلَفَ لا يَنْتَهِي حَتَّى يُهْرِيقَ فِي أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَمًا ، فَخَرَجَ يَتْبَعُ أَثَرَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَنَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْزِلا ، فَقَالَ : " مَنْ رَجُلٌ يَكْلَؤُنَا لَيْلَتَنَا هَذِهِ ؟ " فَانْتُدِبَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَرَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ ، قَالا : نَحْنُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَكُونَا بِفَمِ الشِّعْبِ " ، قَالَ : وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَصْحَابُهُ نَزَلُوا إِلَى شِعْبٍ مِنَ الْوَادِي ، فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ الرَّجُلانِ إِلَى فَمِ الشِّعْبِ ، قَالَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ لِلْمُهَاجِرِيِّ : أَيُّ اللَّيْلِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ أَنْ أَكْفِيَكَ ، أَوَّلَهُ أَوْ آخِرَهُ ؟ قَالَ : اكْفِنِي أَوَّلَهُ ، قَالَ : فَاضْطَجَعَ الْمُهَاجِرِيُّ ، فَنَامَ ، وَقَامَ الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، يُصَلِّي ، وَأَتَى زَوْجُ الْمَرْأَةِ ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى شَخَصَ الرَّجُلِ ، عَرَفَ أَنَّهُ رَبِيئَةَ الْقَوْمِ ، فَرَمَاهُ بِسَهْمٍ ، فَوَضَعَهُ فِيهِ ، فَنَزَعَهُ ، فَوَضَعَهُ ، وَثَبَتَ قَائِمًا يُصَلِّي ، ثُمَّ رَمَاهُ بِسَهْمٍ آخَرَ ، فَوَضَعَهُ فِيهِ ، فَنَزَعَهُ ، وَثَبَتَ قَائِمًا يُصَلِّي ، ثُمَّ عَادَ لَهُ الثَّالِثَةَ ، فَوَضَعَهُ فِيهِ ، فَنَزَعَهُ ، فَوَضَعَهُ ، ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَسَجَدَ ، ثُمَّ أَهَبَّ صَاحِبَهُ ، وَقَالَ : اجْلِسْ ، فَقَدْ أُتِيتُ ، فَوَثَبَ ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُمَا الرَّجُلُ عَرَفَ أَنَّهُ قَدْ نَذِرَ بِهِ ، هَرَبَ ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى الْمُهَاجِرِيُّ مَا بِالأَنْصَارِيِّ مِنَ الدِّمَاءِ ، قَالَ : سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ ، أَفَلا أَهْبَبْتَنِي أَوَّلَ مَا رَمَاكَ ! ؟ قَالَ : كُنْتُ فِي سُورَةٍ أَقْرَأُهَا ، فَلَمْ أُحِبَّ أَنْ أَقْطَعَهَا حَتَّى أُنْفِذَهَا ، فَلَمَّا تَابَعَ عَلَيَّ الرَّمْيَ رَكَعْتُ فَآذَنْتُكَ ، وَايْمُ اللَّهِ لَوْلا أَنْ أُضَيِّعَ ثَغْرًا أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِحِفْظِهِ ، لَقَطَعَ نَفْسِي قَبْلَ أَنْ أَقْطَعَهَا أَوْ أُنْفِذَهَا .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: We set out with the Prophet (peace be upon him) for the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa’. A man belonging to the Muslims killed (or harmed) the wife of a man belonging to the polytheists. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was returning, during that time the husband of that woman had arrived, who was not present there before. When he was informed about this, he swore that he would not rest until he had shed the blood of one of Muhammad’s companions. He set out in pursuit of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) camped at a place and said: Who will guard us tonight? A man from among the Muhajirun and a man from among the Ansar volunteered themselves. Both of them said: O Messenger of Allah! We will do it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Stay at the top of the pass. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions camped in the valley’s pass. When these two men set out towards the top of the pass, the Ansari said to the Muhajir: Which part of the night do you prefer that I take your place? The first part or the last part? The Muhajir said: Take care of the first part. The narrator says: The Muhajir lay down and slept. The Ansari stood up and began to pray. During this time, the husband of that woman came. When he saw the figure of a man, he realized that this was the guard of the people. He shot an arrow, which struck the Ansari. The Ansari pulled out the arrow and put it aside, and continued to stand and pray. Then the man shot a second arrow, which also struck him. The Ansari pulled it out and continued to stand and pray. Then he shot a third time, and that too struck him. The Ansari pulled it out and put it aside, then he bowed, then he prostrated, then he woke up his companion and said: Get up! I have been attacked. The Muhajir immediately got up. When the man saw these two, he realized he would face difficulty, so he ran away. When the Muhajir saw the Ansari’s blood flowing, he said: Subhan Allah! When he shot you the first time, why didn’t you wake me up then? The Ansari replied: I was reciting a Surah, and I did not like to break it before completing it. But when he kept shooting me with arrows, I went into bowing. I informed you. By Allah! If I had not feared that I would neglect the duty the Prophet (peace be upon him) had assigned me to protect, my soul would have departed before I finished that Surah, or I would have completed it.
