Sahih Adab al-Mufrad

Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he used to supplicate: «رب (اللهم) اغفر لي خطأي كله، وإسرافي فى أمري كله، وما أنت أعلم به مني، اللهم اغفر لي خطأي كله، وعمدي وجهلي وهزلي، وكل ذلك عندي اللهم اغفر لي ما قدمت وما أخرت، وما أسررت وما أعلنت، أنت المقدم وأنت المؤخر، وأنت على كل شيء قدير» "O my Lord! (And in another narration: O Allah!) Forgive all my mistakes, forgive all my excesses in my affairs, and (forgive all those errors) which You know better than I do. O Allah! Forgive all my sins, those I committed deliberately, those I committed out of ignorance, those I committed in jest—all of these are from me. O Allah! Forgive me for what I did earlier and what I did later, what I did secretly and what I did openly. You are the One Who brings forward and You are the One Who delays, and You have power over all things."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu’adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took my hand and said: “O Mu’adh!” I said: At your service. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Indeed, I love you.” I said: By Allah, I also love you. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Shall I not teach you some words which you should recite after every prayer?” I said: Yes, indeed. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Say! «اللهم أعني على ذكرك وشكرك ، وحسن عبادتك».”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: In the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), a man said: «الحمد لله حمداً كثيراً طيباً مباركاً فيه» "All praise is for Allah, abundant, pure, and blessed praise." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Who is the one who said this?" The man remained silent. He thought that he had said something in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that was displeasing to him. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Who is it? He has spoken rightly." Then the man said: "I said it, and I only hope for good with it." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, I saw thirteen angels racing to take these words up to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) intended to enter the toilet, he would say: «اللهم إني أعوذ بك من الخبث والخبائث» "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from male and female devils."

Narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would return from the toilet, he would say: «غفرانك» "O Allah! I seek Your forgiveness."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to teach us this supplication just as he would teach us a surah from the Qur'an: «أعوذ بك من عذاب جهنم ، وأعوذ بك من عذاب القبر ، وأعوذ بك من فتنة المسيح الدجال ، وأعوذ بك من فتنة المحيا والممات ، وأعوذ بك من فتنة القبر» .

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I spent the night at my maternal aunt Maymunah’s house. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and went to relieve himself, then he washed his face and his hands, then he went back to sleep. Then he got up, came near the water-skin, opened its mouth, and performed a moderate ablution. He did not use too much water, but he performed a complete and thorough ablution. After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed. Then I also got up, stretched myself, disliking that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) might think I had been awake before. After that, I performed ablution. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing and praying, so I went and stood on his left side. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of my ear and turned me to stand on his right side. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) completed thirteen rak‘ahs of night prayer, then he lay down and slept until he began to snore. Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) slept, he would snore. Then Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and led the (morning) prayer and did not perform ablution (because it is a special characteristic of the Prophets that their ablution is not nullified by lying down). In the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were these words: «اللهم اجعل فى قلبي نوراً ، وفي سمعي نوراً ، وعن يميني نوراً ، وعن يساري نوراً ، وفوقي نوراً ، وتحتي نوراً وأمامي نوراً وخلفي نوراً ، وأعظم لي نوراً». Kurayb said: There were seven types of supplications in the structure, so I met a person from the descendants of Abbas, and he mentioned these seven. He said: (O Allah, place light) in my muscles, in my flesh, in my blood, in my hair, and in my skin, and he mentioned two more things.

And in another narration, it is reported from Sayyiduna Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would get up at night and pray, and when he completed the prayer, he would praise Allah with praises befitting Allah, then his final words would be: «اللهم اجعل لي نوراً فى قلبي و اجعل لي نوراً فى سمعي و اجعل لي نوراً فى بصري و اجعل لي نوراً عن يميني ونوراً عن شمالي واجعل لي نوراً من بين يدي ، ونوراً من خلفي ، وزدني نوراً ، وزدني نوراً ، وزدني نوراً » .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would stand for prayer in the middle of the night, he would say: «اللهم لك الحمد، أنت نور السماوات والأرض ومن فيهن، ولك الحمد، أنت قيام السماوات والأرض، ولك الحمد أنت رب السماوات والأرض ومن فيهن، أنت الحقّ، ووعدك الحقّ، ولقاؤك الحق، والجنة حق، والنار حق، والساعة حق. اللهم لك أسلمت، وبك آمنت، وعليك توكلت، وإليك أنبت، وبك خاصمت، وإليك حاكمت، فاغفر لي ما قدمت وأخرت، وأسررت وأعلنت ، أنت إلهي، لا إله إلا أنت» "O Allah! All praise is for You alone. You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and whatever is in them. All praise is for You, for You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth. All praise is for You, You are the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. You are the Truth, Your promise is true, meeting You is true, Paradise is true, Hell is true, and the Hour is true. O Allah! I submit to You, I believe in You, I put my trust in You, I turn to You, by Your help I dispute (with the disbelievers), and I make You my judge. So forgive all my past and future, hidden and apparent sins. You alone are my deity, and there is no deity except You."

It is narrated from Rifaa Zarqi that he said: When it was the day of Uhud and the polytheists had retreated, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Straighten your rows so that I may praise my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic." The people stood in rows behind him. He said: «اللهم لك الحمد كله، اللهم لا قابض لما بسطت، ولا مقرب لما باعدت، ولا مباعد لما قربت، ولا معطي لما منعت، ولا مانع لما أعطيت. اللهم ابسط علينا من بركاتك ورحمتك، وفضلك ورزقك، اللهم إني أسألك النعيم المقيم الذى لا يحول ولا يزول. اللهم إني أسألك النعيم يوم العيلة، والأمن يوم الحرب، اللهم عائذاً بك من سوء ما أعطيتنا، وشر ما منعت منا اللهم حبب إلينا الإيمان وزينه فى قلوبنا، وكره إلينا الكفر والفسوق والعصيان واجعلنا من الراشدين. اللهم توفنا مسلمين وأحبنا مسلمين، وألحقنا بالصالحين، غير خزايا، ولا مفتونين. اللهم قاتل الكفرة الذى يصدون عن سبيلك ويكذبون رسلك، واجعل عليهم رجزك وعذابك. اللهم قاتل الكفرة الذين أوتوا الكتاب، إله الحق» "O Allah! All praise is for You alone. There is none who can gather what You spread, and none who can bring near what You distance, and none who can distance what You bring near. There is none who can withhold what You give, and none who can give what You withhold. O Allah! Spread upon us Your blessings, mercy, bounty, and provision. O Allah! I ask You for a lasting blessing that neither ends nor ceases. O Allah! I ask You for blessings in times of hardship and for peace on the day of battle. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the evil of whatever You have given us and from the evil of whatever You have withheld from us. O Allah! Instill in our hearts the love of faith and beautify it in our hearts, and instill in our hearts hatred for disbelief, wickedness, and disobedience, and make us among those who are guided to goodness. O Allah! Cause us to die as Muslims, keep us alive as Muslims, and join us with the righteous. Do not disgrace us, nor let us fall into misguidance. O Allah! Kill those disbelievers who prevent others from Your path, who deny Your messengers, so send down Your punishment upon them. O True Deity! Kill those disbelievers who were given the Book."
