Hadith 426
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says that we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man from among the Bedouins came. He was wearing a green shawl cloak. He came and stood over the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Your companion has lowered the status of every horseman," or he said, "Your companion wants to lower the status of every horseman and raise the status of every shepherd." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered his cloak and held it and said: "Do I not see upon you the clothing of the foolish?" Then he said: "When the time of death of Allah's Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) came, he said to his son: I am making a will to you. I command you with two things and forbid you from two things. I command you with «لا اله الا الله», if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on one side of the scale and «لا اله الا الله» was placed on the other side, it would outweigh them. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths became a ring, «لا اله الا الله وسبحان الله وبحمده» would break it (in one narration: it would be its gem). This is the prayer of everything and by it everything is provided sustenance. And I forbid you from shirk and arrogance." Upon this, I said or it was said: "O Messenger of Allah! We have recognized shirk, but what is arrogance?" Is arrogance that if one of us has a cloak, he wears it?" He said: "No." It was asked: "Is it that if one of us has very beautiful shoes and their laces are very beautiful?" He said: "No." It was asked: "Is it that one has a very good animal to ride upon?" He said: "No." It was asked: "That one has friends who sit with him respectfully?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is not it either." It was asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Then what is arrogance?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rejecting the truth and looking down upon people."

Hadith 432
It is narrated from Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman that he said: The companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) were not people who would gather together, nor would they show themselves to be sick or weak (i.e., they did not pretend to be exhausted from worship). And when any one of them was called upon for something by the command of Allah, the pupils of his eyes would turn as if he were insane. (That is, they would become so anxious at Allah’s command that they would open their eyes wide and become fearful lest they fall short in acting upon it.)

I do not even like that anyone surpasses me in this (beauty), or he said, even by the strap of a shoe, or he said, by a red strap. Is this arrogance?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, but arrogance is to reject the truth and to look down upon people."
