Hadith 253
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a person was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so a man praised him well. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Alas, you have cut your companion's neck." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept repeating this. "If any of you must praise someone, he should say: 'I think so-and-so is such and such,' if he thinks him to be so, and his reckoning is with Allah, and do not present anyone's purity before Allah."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard a man praising another man and exaggerating in his praise, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "You have destroyed him," or he said: "You have broken your brother's back." (That is, by praising, a person becomes lazy in action and corruption arises.)
