Hadith 96
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked: Who is the most honorable among the people? He replied: "The most honorable in the sight of Allah is the one who is most God-fearing." The people said: We did not ask about this. He said: "The most honorable among the people (in one narration: the most honorable son of the most honorable, his son the most honorable): Yusuf, who is a Prophet of Allah, the son of a Prophet of Allah, the son of Allah's Khalil (who himself is a Prophet, the son of a Prophet of Allah, and the great-grandson of Allah's Khalil) (Yusuf son of Yaqub son of Ishaq son of Ibrahim)." The people said: We are not asking about this either. He said: "Are you asking about the tribes of the Arabs?" The people said: Yes. He said: "Those who were the best among you in the days of ignorance are the best in Islam, provided they gain understanding in the religion." (The meaning is that if a person is naturally generous and honorable in the days of ignorance, then in Islam he will be even better.)
