It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Four verses of the Qur’an were revealed about me. My mother had sworn an oath that she would neither eat nor drink until I left the company of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). At that time, Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: «وَإِنْجَاهَدَاكَعَلَىأَنْتُشْرِكَبِيمَالَيْسَلَكَبِهِعِلْمٌفَلاَتُطعهُمَاوَصَاحِبْهُمَافِيالدُّنْيَامَعْرُوفًا» “And if they both strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them, but accompany them in this world with kindness.” The second verse: I took a sword that I liked. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Grant it to me as a gift. Upon this, the following verse was revealed: «يَسْأَلُونَكَعَنِالأَنْفَالِ» “They ask you about the spoils of war.” And the third verse: I fell ill. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I want to distribute my wealth among the poor and needy. May I bequeath half of my wealth? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “No.” I said: What about a third? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remained silent, but after him, bequeathing a third became permissible. And the fourth verse: I drank wine with some of the Ansar, and one of them struck my nose with a camel’s jawbone. I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and Allah the Exalted revealed the verse regarding the prohibition of wine.
It is narrated from Sayyida Asma bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), my mother came to me, inclined towards Islam. I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): Should I maintain ties of kinship with her? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Yes." Ibn Uyaynah says that Allah the Exalted then revealed this verse: «لاَيَنْهَاكُمُاللَّهُعَنِالَّذِينَلَمْيُقَاتِلُوكُمْفِيالدِّينِ» "Allah does not forbid you from those who have not fought you because of religion, to deal kindly and justly with them."
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a silk cloak being sold and said: O Messenger of Allah! Buy this and wear it on Fridays or when a delegation comes to you. He (the Prophet ﷺ) said: "Such clothing is worn by those who have no share (in the Hereafter)." Then some cloaks of that kind were brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and he sent one cloak to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). So Umar said: How can I wear it when you have already said what you had to say about it? He (the Prophet ﷺ) said: "I did not give it to you so that you wear it yourself, but so that you may sell it and benefit from it, or dress your women with it." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent that cloak to his brother in Makkah, and he had not yet accepted Islam.
