Hadith 821

821/1073 (Sahih li-ghayrihi) from Ubayd ibn Umayr(1), from Abu Musa who said: I sought permission to enter upon Umar, but I was not granted permission—three times—so I turned away. He sent for me and said: O Abdullah! Was it hard on you to wait at my door? Know that it is likewise hard for people to be kept waiting at your door. I said: Rather, I sought permission to enter upon you three times, and when I was not granted permission, I turned back He said: From whom did you hear this? I said: I heard it from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He said: Did you hear from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, what we did not hear? If you do not bring me proof for this, I will make you an example! So I went out until I came to a group of the Ansar sitting in the mosque, and I asked them. They said: Does anyone doubt this? I informed them of what Umar had said. They said: Only the youngest of us will go with you. So Abu Sa'id al-Khudri—or Abu Mas'ud—stood up with me and went to Umar. He said: We went out with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when he intended to visit Sa'd ibn Ubadah, until he came to him. He gave salam, but was not granted permission. Then he gave salam a second time, then a third, but was not granted permission. He said: "We have fulfilled our duty," then turned back. Sa'd caught up with him and said: O Messenger of Allah! By the One Who sent you with the truth, I did not hear you give salam even once except that I heard it and responded to you, but I wished that you would increase your salam upon me and my household. Abu Musa said(3): By Allah, I was indeed trustworthy regarding the hadith of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He said: Yes, but I wished to verify.
