Sahih Adab al-Mufrad

774/1006- From Al-Tufayl ibn Abi ibn Ka'b: That he used to come to Abdullah ibn Umar, and would go with him to the market in the morning. He said: Whenever we went to the market, Abdullah ibn Umar would not pass by a seller of trinkets, nor a shopkeeper, nor a poor person, nor anyone except that he would greet him with peace. Al-Tufayl said: I came to Abdullah ibn Umar one day, and he asked me to accompany him to the market. I said: What do you do in the market? You do not stop at the sales, nor ask about the goods, nor bargain for them, nor sit in the gatherings of the market. So sit with us here and let us talk. Abdullah said to me: "O Abu Batn! – and Al-Tufayl had a large belly – we only go out for the sake of greeting [نسلم] those whom we meet."
