Hadith 64

It is narrated from Jubair bin Nufair that he said: One day we were sitting with Miqdad bin Aswad. Then a man passed by him and said: How fortunate and blessed are those two eyes that saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, our hearts desire that we too had seen what you saw and participated in those (battles) in which you participated. Upon this, Sayyiduna Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry. So I was surprised that he had said a good thing (why is he getting angry). After that, Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) turned towards him and said: Why does a man wish for things from which Allah has kept him absent? He does not know what his role would have been if he had been there? By Allah, there were also people who saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) whom Allah threw face down into Hell. Because they did not obey the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor did they affirm him. Do you not praise Allah, the Exalted, for the fact that when He created you in this world, you did not know anyone except your Lord? And you affirm the Shariah that your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought. (It is good) you have been saved from the trials through which the Companions passed. By Allah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent in very difficult circumstances, in the time of ignorance and in the period of interruption of prophethood. No prophet was sent in such difficult circumstances. In those days, in the eyes of those people, no religion was better than idolatry. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought such speech which was the Furqan, which distinguished between truth and falsehood. And through it, he created a distinction between father and son (that one would be a disbeliever and the other a Muslim). So much so that if a man saw his father, his son, and his brother in a state of disbelief, and Allah had opened the lock of his own heart with the key of faith, and he knew that his father, brother, or son who was a disbeliever, if he died in that state, he would enter Hell, then his eyes would not be cooled, and he knew that his beloved had gone to Hell. And the coolness of the eyes is only from that which Allah, the Exalted, has said: «‏وَالَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ» "And those who say: Our Lord, grant us from our wives and our offspring the coolness of our eyes." (Meaning that they act upon the Shariah, because the believer's eyes will only be cooled by his children and wife when they are worshippers of Allah.)
