Sahih Adab al-Mufrad

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked his noble wives, and all of them replied that they had nothing except water. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Who will take this guest, or who will host him?" One man from among the Ansar said, "I will." He took him to his wife and said to her, "Honor the guest of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." She said, "We have nothing except the food for the children." He said, "Prepare the food, and adjust the lamp. Put the children to sleep when they ask for dinner." The wife prepared the food, adjusted the lamp, and put the children to sleep. Then she got up as if she was fixing the lamp, but she turned it off, and made the guest feel as if both of them (husband and wife) were eating as well, though they both spent the night hungry. In the morning, he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), upon seeing him, said: "Allah smiled at, or was pleased with, your action last night." Upon this, Allah revealed this verse: «ويؤثرون على أنفسهم ولو كان بهم خصاصة ومن يوق شح نفسه فأولئك هم المفلحون»
