Sahih Adab al-Mufrad

570/738 From ‘Ubada ibn al-Walid ibn al-Samit who said: I went out with my father while I was a young boy, and we met an old man[ عليه بردة ومعافري، وعلى غلامه بردة ومعافري]. I said: “O uncle, what prevented you from giving your boy this striped garment, and taking the cloak, so you would have two cloaks, and he would have the striped garment?” He turned to my father and said: “Is this your son?” He said: “Yes.” He then wiped my head and said: “May Allah bless you. I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say: ‘Feed them from what you eat, and clothe them from what you wear.’ O son of my brother, the loss of worldly goods is more beloved to me than that he should take from the goods of the Hereafter.” I said: “O my father! Who is this man?” He said: “Abu al-Yusr [كعب] ibn ‘Amr.”
