It is narrated from Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman that he said: The companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) were not people who would gather together, nor would they show themselves to be sick or weak (i.e., they did not pretend to be exhausted from worship). In their gatherings, they would recite poetry to each other and remember their days of ignorance. And when any one of them was called upon for something by the command of Allah, the pupils of his eyes would turn as if he were insane. (That is, they would become so anxious at Allah’s command that they would open their eyes wide and become fearful lest they fall short in acting upon it.)
