The three sons of Sa’d narrated from their father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit Sa’d in Mecca when Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “Why are you weeping?” He said: I fear that I might die in this land from which I migrated, just as Sa’d (bin Khawlah) passed away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: “O Allah! Grant Sa’d healing.” Then Sa’d said: I have much wealth, and my only heir is my daughter. Should I bequeath all my wealth (in the way of Allah)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” He said: Two-thirds? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” He said: Half of my wealth? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” He said: Then a third of my wealth? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Yes, a third, and a third is still much. Whatever charity you give from your wealth is charity, and your spending on your wife and children is charity. And whatever your wife eats from your food is charity. And if you leave your family well-off or, he said, provided for, that is better than leaving them in a state where they have to stretch out their hands before people.” And he gestured with his hand.
