Sahih Adab al-Mufrad

Narrated from Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), she says: Once a group of Jews came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: «السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ» "Destruction be upon you." Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I understood, so I said: «عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَاللَّعْنَةُ» She says: Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wait, O Aisha! Indeed, Allah loves gentleness in all matters." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Did you not hear what they said?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have already said: '«وَعَلَيْكُمْ» and the same be upon you.'"
