Hadith 339

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent me and Zubair bin Al-Awwam, and both of us were horsemen. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Go until you reach such-and-such garden. There you will find a woman. She has a letter which Hatib has written to the polytheists. Bring that letter to me." We found that woman on her camel at exactly the place the Prophet (peace be upon him) had indicated for us. So we said to her: "Where is the letter that is with you?" She said: "I have no letter." So we searched her and her camel. My companion said: "I think she does not have it." I said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the Prophet (peace be upon him) has never spoken falsely. O woman, either produce the letter or I will strip you naked." So she lowered her hand to her back. She was wearing a woolen waistband. From it, she took out the letter. We brought the letter to the Prophet (peace be upon him). Upon this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This man (Hatib) has betrayed Allah, His Messenger (peace be upon him), and all the Muslims. Allow me to strike off his head." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said (to Hatib): "What made you do this?" He said: "What happened to me except that I am a believer in Allah? My intention was that I would have a favor with those people (the people of Makkah)." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Umar! He has spoken the truth. Is he not among those who fought at Badr? Perhaps Allah has looked at them and said: 'Do whatever you wish, Paradise has been made obligatory for you.'" So tears began to flow from both eyes of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) know best."
