Sahih Adab al-Mufrad

Humaid bin Abdur Rahman reports that his mother, Umm Kulthum, who was the daughter of Uqbah bin Abi Mu’it, narrated that she heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “He is not a liar who reconciles between people, so (for reconciliation) he says something good or conveys something good.” She said: “I did not hear the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) permit lying to people except in three cases: for reconciling between people, a man speaking to his wife, and a woman speaking to her husband.” (That is, if a misunderstanding arises, something may be said for reconciliation whose apparent and inner meanings differ, but outright lying should still not be done.)
