Sahih Adab al-Mufrad

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he stated: Once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Tell me about a tree which is like the example of a Muslim, which gives fruit by the command of its Lord in every season, its leaves do not fall, and it does not hide its fruit within its leaves?” In my heart, I thought that such a tree is the date palm tree, but I did not like to speak. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) were also present there. When both of them did not speak, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “It is the date palm tree.” When I left from there with my father, I said: Father! In my heart, I thought that it is the date palm tree. He said: Who stopped you from speaking? If you had said it, it would have been dearer to me than such and such things. I said: Since you and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not speak, I did not find it appropriate to speak.
