Hadith 275

It is narrated from Rafi' bin Khadij and Sahl bin Abi Hathmah that both of them stated, or both narrated, that Abdullah bin Sahal and Muhayyisah bin Mas'ud both came to Khaybar and got separated from each other in an orchard. Then Abdullah bin Sahal was killed (while alone). So, Abdur Rahman bin Sahal and the two sons of Mas'ud, Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah, all three came together to the service of the Prophet (ﷺ) and began to talk about their (deceased) companion. Abdur Rahman began the conversation, and he was the youngest among them. So the Prophet (ﷺ) said to them, "Let the elder begin." Yahya says that (this means) the eldest should speak. So they spoke to the Prophet (ﷺ) about their companion's matter. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "You can claim the right to the blood money of your slain companion by the oath of fifty men from your side." (That is, fifty men should swear that the Jews killed him.) They said, "O Messenger of Allah! This is something we did not witness. The Jews will be acquitted before you by swearing fifty oaths." They said, "O Messenger of Allah! These people are disbelievers. How can we accept their oaths?" Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) paid the blood money himself. Sahl narrates: In this, a she-camel came to my share. I went to their enclosure, and it kicked me.
