Amr bin Abu Qurrah Kindi says: My father proposed the hand of his sister in marriage before Salman (may Allah be pleased with him), but he refused and married his freed slave woman whose name was Baqirah. Abu Qurrah heard that there was some issue (some discord) between Hudhayfah and Salman, so he came looking for Salman. He was told that Salman was at his vegetable beds (in his field). He went in that direction and met Salman, who was carrying a basket on his shoulder filled with vegetables, and his staff was placed in the handle of the basket. Abu Qurrah said: O Abu Abdullah! What is the matter (discord) between you and Hudhayfah? It is narrated: Salman said: «وَكَانَالإِنْسَانُعَجُولاً» "Man is ever hasty." We (Abu Qurrah and Salman) kept walking until we reached Salman's house. Salman entered his house and said: "As-salamu 'alaykum," then he permitted Abu Qurrah to enter, so he also entered and saw that there was a leather bed placed at the door, with some bricks at its edge and a little saddle cloth. He said: Sit on the bed of his slave woman; this is the bed she lays out for herself (this is an account of the extreme simplicity of the Companions, meaning that a leather mattress was laid out, bricks were placed, and a saddle was placed on the bricks, making it into a pillow). There was a bed, bricks placed at the head, some pieces of vegetables lying around. Salman said: Sit on the bed of his slave woman which she has kept for herself. Then he began to explain to him, saying: The reason for the discord between me and Hudhayfah was that Hudhayfah used to narrate some hadiths, and those were words the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say to people in a state of anger, so people would come to me asking about those matters, whether it was permissible to say them or not. (Hudhayfah used to say that these hadiths were narrated by the Prophet (peace be upon him), so we can also say them, whereas Salman's opinion was that since the Prophet (peace be upon him) said them in anger, we cannot say them.) I would say: Hudhayfah knows best what he says, only he knows, and I disliked that enmity should increase among people. Some people went to Hudhayfah and said: Salman neither affirms you nor denies you in what you say. So Hudhayfah came to me (meaning Hudhayfah demanded that Salman affirm him). He said: O Salman, son of Umm Salman! (i.e., he spoke harsh words, so Salman says that I also became angry) so I said: O Hudhayfah, son of Umm Hudhayfah! You better stop, otherwise I will write to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about you. When I threatened him with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he left me alone, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am from the children of Adam; if I have unjustly cursed or spoken harshly to any servant, O Allah, make it a mercy for him." Then they continued talking. He said that Hudhayfah used to narrate those things which the Messenger (peace be upon him) said to some people in a state of anger. These things were brought to me and I was asked about them, so I said that Hudhayfah knows best what he narrates. I disliked that malice should spread among people. People went to Hudhayfah and said that Salman neither affirms you nor denies you. After that, Hudhayfah came to me and said: O Salman, son of Umm Salman! I also said: O Hudhayfah, son of Umm Hudhayfah! Either stop this behavior or I will write to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When I threatened him with Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he left me alone, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I curse anyone among the children of Adam or speak harshly to him against his will, then I am actually making it a mercy for him."
