It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mahdhurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I was sitting with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when Safwan bin Umayyah brought a bowl, which some people were carrying in a cloak. They placed it before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called some poor people and some slaves from among the people around him, and they ate with him. Then, on this occasion, he said: "May Allah do this to the people," or he said: "May Allah curse the people who turn away from their slaves regarding eating together with them." Safwan said: "Beware, by Allah! We do not turn away from them, but we prefer ourselves over them. By Allah! We do not eat so much of the good food that we eat ourselves and also feed them. Rather, we prefer them over ourselves. By Allah! We do not eat good food ourselves and also feed them."
