And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A man was walking arrogantly in two garments, and he was overcome with self-conceit, so (by the command of Allah) he was caused to sink into the earth, and he will remain (in that state) until the Day of Resurrection."

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (or 'Abul Qasim) said, "While a man was walking, clad in a two-piece garment and proud of himself with his hair well-combed, suddenly Allah made him sink into the earth and he will go on sinking into it till the Day of Resurrection.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The Owner and Administrator of this entire universe is Allah, and when a person becomes His, then He can help him in whatever manner He wills. Thus, the background of a nation’s rise and fall is precisely this: that whichever nation becomes obedient and submissive to Allah, Allah appoints cosmic forces to assist it. And when any nation begins to transgress the ultimate limits in opposition and rebellion against Allah, He destroys and ruins it through the very cosmic forces.
