Hadith 116

And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The Children of Israel were commanded to enter the door in a state of prostration and to say (along with it), '(O Allah!) Forgive us' (so that all your sins may be forgiven), but they altered it. So instead of prostrating, they entered the door dragging themselves on their buttocks, and instead of saying «حطة», they said «حبة في شعيرة» (which means wheat)."

Hadith Commentary:
1.
It is stated in the Noble Qur’an:
“Then those who did wrong changed the word that had been told to them, so We sent down upon those wrongdoers a punishment from the sky because of their rebelliousness and disobedience.” ()
In any case, these wretched people completely disobeyed the command of Allah, the Exalted.
Instead of humility and meekness after victory, pride and arrogance developed within them, and they began to strut about.

2.
From this incident, one can gauge the extent of their disobedience and rebellion that had developed within them, as well as their mockery and ridicule of the divine commands. The reality is that when any nation declines in terms of morals and character, its attitude towards the divine commands becomes just like that of the Children of Israel.
Allah, the Exalted, afflicted them with a deadly disease like the plague as a consequence of this violation, as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“This plague is a part of that punishment and torment which was sent upon some people before you.”

Hadith Commentary:
In summary, the Children of Israel altered the command of Allah and, instead, began to mock the divine command.
As a result, they were seized by punishment.
This is the very punishment for such insolent individuals.

Hadith Commentary:

From this hadith, one can gauge the mischief of the Children of Israel and their mockery of the divine commandments.
These wrongdoers, instead of complying with the command, opposed it both in action and in speech, and became engrossed in worldly pursuits.
To add to this, they also committed distortion (tahrif), and as a consequence of this crime, they were subjected to a severe punishment.
A plague (ta‘un) was sent upon them as a torment.

The reality is that when any nation declines to such an extent in terms of morals and character, then according to the divine law, they are wiped off the face of the earth.

Hadith Commentary:
When he began to say this to the Lord in a mocking manner, he became subject to the wrath of Allah.

Hadith Commentary:

The Children of Israel were instructed that when you enter Bayt al-Maqdis, do so with your heads bowed, seeking forgiveness from Allah for your sins. However, they changed the entire program.
Instead of entering with humility, they entered arrogantly, and instead of seeking forgiveness for their sins with their tongues, they began uttering meaningless words.
This was their foolishness and rebellion, and their intention was to oppose the command of Allah.
On this basis, they were seized by the wrath of Allah.
The plague was imposed upon them, and thus seventy thousand of the Children of Israel perished in a single moment.

From this hadith, it is understood that a person should always adopt humility and meekness, seeking forgiveness from Allah for his sins. Persisting in them with arrogance can become a prelude to punishment from Allah.
