Imam Tirmidhi says:
1- According to the scholars, the prayer mentioned in this hadith refers to voluntary (nafl) prayer.
2- Muhammad bin Bashar narrated to us, he says that Ibn ‘Adi narrated to us, and Ibn ‘Adi from Ash’ath bin ‘Abdul Malik, and Ash’ath from Hasan, he says: In nafl prayer, if a person wishes, he may pray standing, or if he wishes, he may pray sitting, or if he wishes, he may pray lying down.
3- And regarding the prayer of a sick person, when he is unable to pray sitting, the scholars have differed: some scholars say that he should lie on his right side and pray, and some say he should lie flat on his back and his feet should be towards the qiblah.
4- Sufyan Thawri says that in this hadith, where it is mentioned that whoever prays sitting will receive half the reward of the one who prays standing, this is for (nafl) prayers for a healthy person and for one who has no (legal) excuse. As for the person who has an excuse due to illness or something else and prays (obligatory) prayer sitting, he will receive the full reward like the one who prays standing. In some chains of this hadith, a similar statement to that of Sufyan Thawri is also narrated as marfu’.
Hadith 2633
