Hadith 1218
Hatim bin Ismail Madani narrated to us from Ja’far (al-Sadiq) bin Muhammad (al-Baqir), who narrated from his father, who said: We came to Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he began to ask about everyone, until he stopped at me. I told him: I am Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn. He (out of affection) extended his hand and placed it on my head, then opened my upper and lower button, and (with utmost affection and love) placed his palm in the middle of my chest. At that time, I was a young man. He said: Welcome, my nephew! Ask whatever you wish. I asked him questions, and he was blind at that time. (At that moment) the time for prayer came, and he wrapped himself in a thickly woven cloth and stood up for prayer. Whenever he would throw one end (of the cloth) over his shoulder, due to its shortness, both ends would fall back, while his (larger) cloak was hanging on a peg at his side. He led us in prayer, and after finishing, I said: Tell me about the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He gestured with his hand and made a gesture of nine, and said: Indeed, for nine years the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) refrained (from Hajj), he did not perform Hajj. Then, in the tenth year, he (peace and blessings be upon him) announced among the people that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing Hajj. (Upon hearing this announcement) a large number of people came to Madinah. All of them wished to follow the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and to do whatever he did. (So) we all set out with him (peace and blessings be upon him) until we reached Dhul-Hulaifah. (There) Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to Muhammad bin Abi Bakr, and she sent a message to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asking: (In this state of childbirth) what should I do? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Perform ghusl, tie a cloth around yourself, and enter into the state of Ihram for Hajj.” Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in the mosque (of Dhul-Hulaifah) and mounted his she-camel. When his she-camel stood upright with him at the place of Bayda’, I saw in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), as far as the eye could see, people on foot and mounted. The same was the case to his right, to his left, and behind him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was among us. The Qur’an would be revealed to him, and he alone knew its (true) interpretation. Whatever he (peace and blessings be upon him) did, we would do likewise. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) proclaimed the Talbiyah of (Allah’s) Oneness: “Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka Labbayk, innal hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.” The people recited the same Talbiyah, and the people recited the Talbiyah as they do today (with some additions). He did not reject anything in their Talbiyah, and continued to recite his own Talbiyah (as he was reciting). Jabir (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Our intention was for nothing but Hajj; (in the months of Hajj) we did not even know about ‘Umrah. Until when we came to Makkah with him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) touched the Black Stone (with his hand or lips), then (began Tawaf), in the first three circuits he walked briskly with small steps, moving his shoulders, and in the remaining four circuits he walked normally. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went towards Maqam Ibrahim and recited this verse: (وَاتَّخِذُوا مِن مَّقَامِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ مُصَلًّى) “And take the station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.” And he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed Maqam Ibrahim between himself and the House. My father (Muhammad al-Baqir) used to say—and I do not know if he said this from anyone other than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)—that in those two rak’ahs he used to recite (قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ) and (قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the Black Stone, touched it, and exited towards (the gate of) Safa. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) approached (the hill of) Safa, he recited this verse: (إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ ۖ) “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.” I begin (my Sa’i) from where Allah began (its mention). And he (peace and blessings be upon him) began his Sa’i from Safa. He ascended it until he could see the House, then he faced the Qiblah, declared the Oneness and Greatness of Allah, and said: “There is no god but Allah, He is alone, all sovereignty is His, and all praise is for Him. There is no god but Allah, He fulfilled His promise, aided His servant, and alone defeated all the confederates.” Between these (words) he made supplication. He repeated these words three times. Then he descended towards Marwah. When his blessed feet reached the bottom of the valley, he (peace and blessings be upon him) hastened (walked briskly), and when he began to ascend (towards Marwah), he walked normally until he reached Marwah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) did on Marwah as he had done on Safa. When it was the last circuit on Marwah, he said: “If I had known beforehand what I came to know later, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal with me, and I would have made this (ritual) an ‘Umrah. So, whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal with him, let him exit Ihram and make this (ritual) an ‘Umrah.” (At that moment) Suraqah bin Malik al-Ja’shami (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and asked: O Messenger of Allah! Is this (‘Umrah during the months of Hajj) for this year only or forever? He (peace and blessings be upon him) interlaced the fingers of his hands and said: “‘Umrah has entered into Hajj.” He did this twice and said: “Not just for this year, but forever and ever.” Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came from Yemen with the sacrificial camels of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He saw Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) among those who had exited Ihram, wearing colored clothes and with kohl applied. He (Ali) considered this inappropriate for her. She replied: My noble father (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to do so. (Jabir, may Allah be pleased with them both, said:) Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say in Iraq: I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) because of what Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) had done, to incite him against her and to ask him about what she had said regarding him. I told the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that I had objected to her action (of exiting Ihram). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Fatimah has spoken the truth, she has spoken the truth. And when you made your intention for Hajj, what did you say?” I replied: I said, O Allah! I respond to You for the same (ritual) for which Your noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) responded. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I have the sacrificial animal with me. (I cannot exit Ihram after ‘Umrah, and your intention is like mine, so) do not exit Ihram after ‘Umrah.” (Jabir, may Allah be pleased with them both, said:) The total number of animals that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) brought from Yemen and those that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought with him was one hundred. Then (after ‘Umrah) all the people (who did not have sacrificial animals) exited Ihram and cut their hair, except the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and those with him who had sacrificial animals (they did not exit Ihram). When the day of Tarwiyah (8th Dhul-Hijjah) came, the people set out towards Mina, reciting the Talbiyah for Hajj (after entering into Ihram). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his ride. He (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr prayers there (in Mina). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed for a while until the sun rose. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that a tent made of hair be pitched for him at Namirah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) set out. The Quraysh had no doubt that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would stop at the Sacred Monument (Muzdalifah), as the Quraysh used to do in the days of ignorance. (But) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed on until he reached Arafat. There he (peace and blessings be upon him) found a tent pitched for him in the valley of Namirah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) entered it. When the sun had declined, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that his she-camel Qaswa’ be brought, and its saddle was placed on it for him. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the middle of the valley (of Arafat) and addressed the people: “Your blood and your wealth are sacred to one another, as sacred as this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours. All matters of the days of ignorance are under my feet (i.e., abolished). The blood feuds of the days of ignorance are abolished, and the first blood I abolish is that of Ibn Rabi’ah, who was being suckled among Banu Sa’d and was killed by Hudhayl (so I do not seek retribution for it). Likewise, the usury of the days of ignorance is abolished (i.e., no one may take accrued interest from that time), and the first usury I abolish from among our usury is that of Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, for it is all abolished. And fear Allah regarding women, for you have taken them by Allah’s trust and made their private parts lawful by Allah’s word (marriage). Your right over them is that they do not allow anyone you dislike to enter your beds (i.e., your homes). If they do so, then discipline them in a way that does not cause injury (i.e., no broken bones, no loss of limb, no disfigurement). Their right over you is that you provide for them food and clothing in a reasonable manner. I am leaving among you something which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah. And you will be asked about me (on the Day of Judgment), so what will you say?” They all said: We bear witness that you have conveyed the message of Allah, fulfilled the trust, and advised the Ummah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his index finger towards the sky and then pointed it towards the people and said: “O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness!” three times (and gestured thus). Then the call to prayer and the Iqamah were given, and he led the Zuhr prayer, then the Iqamah was given and he led the Asr prayer, and he did not pray anything between them (i.e., no Sunnah or Nafl). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted and came to the place of standing (Mawqif), turned the belly of his camel towards the rocks, made the path in front of him, and faced the Qiblah, and remained there until sunset. The yellow color (of the sun) was fading little by little, and the sun had set. Then (he mounted), took Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) behind him, and returned (towards Muzdalifah), and the reins of Qaswa’ were so tight that its head touched the saddle’s front (the place where sometimes a rider, when tired, places his hanging foot). He (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his right hand: “O people, go slowly, calmly.” And whenever he came upon a sand hill (where the crowd was less), he would loosen the reins a little until the camel ascended. (Eventually they reached Muzdalifah, and there) he combined Maghrib and Isha with one Adhan and two Iqamahs, and did not pray anything between the two obligatory prayers (i.e., no Sunnah, etc.). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) lay down. (SubhanAllah, what devoted servants the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had, that they observed and preserved every detail of his sleeping, sitting, rising, waking, eating, and drinking. May Allah have mercy on them.) When morning came and Fajr became apparent, he prayed Fajr with Adhan and Iqamah, then mounted Qaswa’ until he came to Mash’ar al-Haram, faced the Qiblah, supplicated to Allah, said Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, and proclaimed His Oneness, and remained there until it became very bright. He (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from there before sunrise, and took Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) behind him. Fadl (may Allah be pleased with him) was a young, handsome, fair-skinned man with good hair. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, a group of women passed by, each riding on a camel, and all of them passed by, and Fadl began to look at them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on Fadl’s face (and did not say anything. SubhanAllah, this was a matter of character, and how beautifully he forbade evil). Fadl turned his face to the other side and began to look (this was due to his complete tranquility at the character of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) again turned his hand and placed it on his face, and Fadl turned his face to the other side and looked again, until they reached Batn Muhassir. Then he made the camel go a little faster and took the middle path that leads to Jamrat al-Kubra, until he came to the Jamrah near the tree (which is called Jamrat al-Aqabah). He threw seven pebbles at it, saying Allahu Akbar with each pebble, pebbles like the size of chickpeas (and as big as broad beans), and he threw them from the middle of the valley (so that Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah were to his right, and Makkah to his left). Then he came to the place of sacrifice and slaughtered sixty-three camels with his own hand, and gave the rest to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who slaughtered them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) included him in his sacrifice. Then he ordered that a piece of meat from each camel be taken, placed in a pot, and cooked. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) both ate from it and drank its broth. Then he mounted and came to the House (Ka’bah) and performed the Tawaf of Ifadah, and prayed Zuhr in Makkah. Then he came to the sons of Abdul Muttalib, who were giving water at Zamzam. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Draw water, O sons of Abdul Muttalib! If I did not fear that people would crowd you and prevent you from drawing water, I would have drawn water with you (i.e., if I did, it would become Sunnah, and the whole Ummah would do it, and your privilege would be lost).” Then they gave him a bucket, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) drank from it.
Hadith 2314
Narrated to us by ‘Amr al-Naqid, narrated to us by Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah, from Ibn al-Munkadir, that he heard Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah. And narrated to us by Ishaq, informed us by Sufyan, from Ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, and from ‘Amr, from Muhammad ibn ‘Ali, from Jabir, one of them adding to the other. And narrated to us by Ibn Abi ‘Umar—and the wording is his—he said: Sufyan said: I heard Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir say: I heard Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah say—Sufyan said: And I also heard ‘Amr ibn Dinar narrate, from Muhammad ibn ‘Ali, he said: I heard Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah, and one of them added to the other, he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “If the wealth of Bahrain comes to us, I would surely give you like this, and like this, and like this,” and he gestured with both his hands. But the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed away before the wealth of Bahrain came. Then it arrived to Abu Bakr after him, so he ordered a caller to announce: Whoever has a promise or a debt upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, let him come. So I stood and said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If the wealth of Bahrain comes to us, I would give you like this, and like this, and like this. So Abu Bakr scooped once, then said to me: Count it. So I counted it, and it was five hundred. He said: Take twice as much.
