Hadith 11
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جَمِيلِ بْنِ طَرِيفِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الثَّقَفِيُّ ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ فِيمَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُهَيْلٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ طَلْحَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، يَقُولُ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ أَهْلِ نَجْدٍ ، ثَائِرُ الرَّأْسِ ، نَسْمَعُ دَوِيَّ صَوْتِهِ ، وَلَا نَفْقَهُ مَا يَقُولُ ، حَتَّى دَنَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَإِذَا هُوَ يَسْأَلُ عَنِ الإِسْلَامِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " خَمْسُ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي الْيَوْمِ وَاللَّيْلَةِ " ، فَقَالَ : هَلْ عَلَيَّ غَيْرُهُنَّ ؟ قَالَ : لَا ، إِلَّا أَنْ تَطَّوَّعَ ، وَصِيَامُ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ ، فَقَالَ : هَلْ عَلَيَّ غَيْرُهُ ؟ فَقَالَ : لَا ، إِلَّا أَنْ تَطَّوَّعَ ، وَذَكَرَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الزَّكَاةَ ، فَقَالَ : هَلْ عَلَيَّ غَيْرُهَا ؟ قَالَ : لَا ، إِلَّا أَنْ تَطَّوَّعَ ، قَالَ : فَأَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : وَاللَّهِ لَا أَزِيدُ عَلَى هَذَا ، وَلَا أَنْقُصُ مِنْهُ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَفْلَحَ إِنْ صَدَقَ " .
It is reported on the authority of Talha bin 'Ubaidullah that a person with dishevelled hair, one of the people of Nejd, came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) . We heard the humming of his voice but could not fully discern what he had been saying, till he came nigh to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) . It was then (disclosed to us) that he was asking questions pertaining to Islam. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Five prayers during the day and the night. (Upon this he said: Am I obliged to say any other (prayer) besides these? He (the Holy Prophet,) said: No, but whatever you observe voluntarily, out of your own free will, and the fasts of Ramadan. The inquirer said: Am I obliged to do anything else besides this? He (the Holy Prophet) said: No, but whatever you do out of your own free will. And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) told him about the Zakat (poor-rate). The inquirer said: Am I obliged to pay anything else besides this? He (the Holy Prophet) said: No, but whatever you pay voluntarily out of your own free will. The man turned back and was saying: I would neither make any addition to this, nor will decrease anything out of it. The Prophet (ﷺ) remarked: He is successful, if he is true to what he affirms.
Hadith 11
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ وَقُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ جَمِيعًا ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيل بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُهَيْلٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ مَالِكٍ ، غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ : فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَفْلَحَ ، وَأَبِيهِ إِنْ صَدَقَ ، أَوْ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ ، وَأَبِيهِ إِنْ صَدَقَ " .
Another hadith, the like of which has been narrated by Malik (b. Anas) (and mentioned above) is also reported by Talha b. 'Ubaidullah, with the only variation that the Prophet remarked: By his father, he shall succeed if he were true (to what he professed), or: By his father, he would enter heaven if he were true (to what he professed).
Hadith 59
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، وَقُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، وَاللَّفْظُ لِيَحْيَى ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو سُهَيْلٍ نَافِعُ بْنُ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَبِي عَامِرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " آيَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ ثَلَاثٌ ، إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ ، وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ ، وَإِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ " .
It is reported on the authority of Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (may peace and blessings be upon him) said: Three are the signs of a hypocrite: when he spoke he told a lie, when he made a promise he acted treacherously against it, when he was trusted he betrayed.
Hadith 230
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لِقُتَيْبَةَ ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي النَّضْرِ ، عَنْ أَبِي أَنَسٍ ، أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ تَوَضَّأَ بِالْمَقَاعِدِ ، فَقَالَ : " أَلَا أُرِيكُمْ وُضُوءَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا " ، وَزَادَ قُتَيْبَةُ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ ، قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : قَالَ أَبُو النَّضْرِ : عَنْ أَبِي أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : وَعِنْدَهُ رِجَالٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Abu Anas reported that 'Uthman performed ablution at Maqi'aid and said: Should I not show you the ablution performed by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ? And he then washed (the different parts of the body) three times. Qutaiba has added in his narration the words: "There were with him (with 'Uthman) Companions of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ."
Hadith 1079
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، وَقُتَيْبَةُ ، وَابْنُ حُجْرٍ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ وَهُوَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُهَيْلٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِذَا جَاءَ رَمَضَانُ ، فُتِّحَتْ أَبْوَابُ الْجَنَّةِ وَغُلِّقَتْ أَبْوَابُ النَّارِ ، وَصُفِّدَتِ الشَّيَاطِينُ " .
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: When there comes the month of Ramadan, the gates of mercy are opened, and the gates of Hell are locked and the devils are chained.
Hadith 1079
وحَدَّثَنِي حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي أَنَسٍ ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا كَانَ رَمَضَانُ ، فُتِّحَتْ أَبْوَابُ الرَّحْمَةِ ، وَغُلِّقَتْ أَبْوَابُ جَهَنَّمَ ، وَسُلْسِلَتِ الشَّيَاطِينُ " ،
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: When there comes the month of Ramadan, the gates of mercy are opened, and the gates of Hell are locked and the devils are chained.
Hadith 1079
وحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ ، وَالْحُلْوَانِيُّ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنْ صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي نَافِعُ بْنُ أَبِي أَنَسٍ ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا دَخَلَ رَمَضَانُ " بِمِثْلِهِ .
This hadith is reported by Abu Hurairah (RA) (with a slight alteration of words) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:" When (the month of) Ramadan begins."
Hadith 1585
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ ، وَهَارُونُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْأَيْلِيُّ ، وأحمد بن عيسى ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي مَخْرَمَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ يَسَارٍ ، يَقُولُ : إِنَّهُ سَمِعَ مَالِكَ بْنَ أَبِي عَامِرٍ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ : أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " لَا تَبِيعُوا الدِّينَارَ بِالدِّينَارَيْنِ ، وَلَا الدِّرْهَمَ بِالدِّرْهَمَيْنِ " .
'Uthman bin 'Affan reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Do not sell a dinar for two dinars and one dirham for two dirhams.
