Hadith 468
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ طَلْحَةَ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي الْعَاصِ الثَّقَفِيُّ ، " أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ لَهُ : أُمَّ قَوْمَكَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي أَجِدُ فِي نَفْسِي شَيْئًا ، قَالَ : ادْنُهْ ، فَجَلَّسَنِي بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ وَضَعَ كَفَّهُ فِي صَدْرِي بَيْنَ ثَدْيَيَّ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : تَحَوَّلْ ، فَوَضَعَهَا فِي ظَهْرِي بَيْنَ كَتِفَيَّ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : أُمَّ قَوْمَكَ ، فَمَنْ أَمَّ قَوْمًا ، فَلْيُخَفِّفْ ، فَإِنَّ فِيهِمُ الْكَبِيرَ ، وَإِنَّ فِيهِمُ الْمَرِيضَ ، وَإِنَّ فِيهِمُ الضَّعِيفَ ، وَإِنَّ فِيهِمُ ذَا الْحَاجَةِ ، وَإِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ وَحْدَهُ ، فَلْيُصَلِّ كَيْفَ شَاءَ " .
'Uthman bin Abu'l-'As at-Thaqafi reported: The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) said to him: Lead your people in prayer. I said: Messenger of Allah. I perceive something (disturbing) in my soul. He (the Holy Prophet) asked me to draw near him and making me sit down in front of him he placed his hand on my breast between my nipples. and then, telling me to turn round, he placed it on my back between my shoulders. He then said: Act as an Imam for your people. He who acts as Imam of the people, he must be brief, for among them are the aged, among them are the sick, among them are the weak, and among them are the people who have business to attend. But when any of you prays alone, he may pray as he likes.
Hadith 468
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي الْعَاصِ ، قَالَ : " آخِرُ مَا عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، إِذَا أَمَمْتَ قَوْمًا ، فَأَخِفَّ بِهِمُ الصَّلَاةَ " .
Uthman bin Abu'l-'As reported: The last thing which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) instructed me was: When you lead the people in prayer, be brief.
Hadith 2202
حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ ، وَحَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قالا : أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعُ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَاصِ الثَّقَفِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ شَكَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَجَعًا يَجِدُهُ فِي جَسَدِهِ مُنْذُ أَسْلَمَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " ضَعْ يَدَكَ عَلَى الَّذِي تَأَلَّمَ مِنْ جَسَدِكَ ، وَقُلْ بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ ثَلَاثًا ، وَقُلْ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ ، وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ " .
'Uthman bin Abu al-'As Al-Thaqafi reported that he made a complaint of pain to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) that he felt in his body at the time he had become Muslim. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Place your hand at the place where you feel pain in your body and say Bismillah (in the name of Allah) three times and seven times A'udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa ukhdhiru (I seek refuge with Allah and with His Power from the evil that I find and that I fear).
Hadith 2203
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَي بْنُ خَلَفٍ الْبَاهِلِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ ، أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ أَبِي الْعَاصِ ، أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ قَدْ حَالَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ صَلَاتِي وَقِرَاءَتِي يَلْبِسُهَا عَلَيَّ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " ذَاكَ شَيْطَانٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ خَنْزَبٌ ، فَإِذَا أَحْسَسْتَهُ فَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنْهُ ، وَاتْفِلْ عَلَى يَسَارِكَ ثَلَاثًا " ، قَالَ : فَفَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ فَأَذْهَبَهُ اللَّهُ عَنِّي .
'Uthman bin Abu al-'As reported that he came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said: Allah's Messenger, the Satan intervenes between me and my prayer and my reciting of the Qur'an and he confounds me. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: That is (the doing of the Satan) who is known as Khinzab, and when you perceive its effect, seek refuge with Allah from it and spit three times to your left. I did that and Allah dispelled that from me.
Hadith 2203
حَدَّثَنَاه مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا سَالِمُ بْنُ نُوحٍ . ح وحدثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ كِلَاهُمَا ، عَنْ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَاصِ ، أَنَّهُ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ بِمِثْلِهِ ، وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ فِي حَدِيثِ سَالِمِ بْنِ نُوحٍ ثَلَاثًا .
'Uthman bin Abu al-'As reported that he came to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) and he narrated like this. In the hadith transmitted on the authority of Salam bin Nuh there is no mention of three times.
Hadith 2203
وحدثني مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الشِّخِّيرِ ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَاصِ الثَّقَفِيِّ ، قال : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِهِمْ .
This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of 'Uthman bin Abu al-'As with a slight variation of wording.
