Hadith 3407
Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was with one of the Mothers of the Believers, when another of his wives sent a bowl of food. The first wife (out of anger) struck the hand of the one bringing the food, causing the bowl to fall and break. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) picked up the two pieces of the vessel, joined one to the other, and began gathering the food in it, saying: "Your mother has become jealous (because food was sent to my house)." He said: "Eat the food." The people ate, and then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept the messenger back until the wife in whose house he was brought her own bowl. Then he gave this intact bowl to the messenger and left the broken bowl in the house of the wife who had broken it.

Narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she brought food in a bowl to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions. Meanwhile, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) came wearing a sheet, and she had a stone with her, with which she struck the bowl and broke it into two pieces. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to join the two pieces of the bowl and was saying: “Eat, your mother has become jealous,” and he said it twice. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took Aisha’s bowl and sent it to Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), and gave Umm Salamah’s bowl to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).

‘Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I have not seen any woman who could cook food like Umm al-Mu’minin Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). She sent a dish to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in which there was food. I could not control myself and I broke the dish. Then I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about its expiation, so he said: “A dish like the (broken) dish and food like the (spilled) food.”

Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was staying with Umm al-Mu’minin Zainab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) and was drinking honey at her place. I and Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) consulted each other that whichever of us the Prophet (peace be upon him) comes to, she should say: “I find the smell of Maghafir 1 coming from you; have you eaten Maghafir?” He went to one of them and she said this. He replied: “No, I drank honey at Zainab bint Jahsh’s place, and now I will not drink it again.” So, because of Aisha and Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with them), this verse «يا أيها النبي لم تحرم ما أحل اللہ لك» “O Prophet! Why do you forbid (for yourself) that which Allah has made lawful for you?” (At-Tahrim: 1) and «إن تتوبا إلى اللہ» “(O wives of the Prophet!) If you both turn in repentance to Allah, (it will be better for you)” (At-Tahrim: 4) were revealed. And because of his statement: “I drank honey,” this verse was revealed: «وإذ أسر النبي إلى بعض أزواجه حديثا» “And remember when the Prophet confided a matter in secret to one of his wives” (At-Tahrim: 3).

Narrated from Muhammad bin Qais that he heard Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) saying: “Shall I not relate to you an incident of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and myself?” We said: “Why not?” She said: “On the night it was my turn, the Prophet returned from ‘Isha, placed his shoes by his feet, laid down his cloak, and spread his lower garment on the bed. He had only rested a little when he thought I had fallen asleep, so he quietly put on his shoes, gently took his cloak, slowly opened the door, went out, and then quietly closed it. I also put my head covering on my head, wrapped myself in my cloak, put on my lower garment, and followed behind him until he reached the Baqi’ cemetery. There, he raised his hands three times, stood for a long time, then turned back, so I also turned back. He walked quickly, so I walked quickly. Then he increased his pace, so I increased mine. Then he started running, so I started running. I overtook him and entered (the house), and I had just lain down when he entered and said: ‘What is the matter, Aisha! Why are you out of breath?’ (Sulaiman bin Dawud said: I think my sheikh said: «حشیا», meaning) ‘Why are you out of breath?’ He said: ‘Tell me, or the Subtle and All-Aware, that is, Allah, will inform me.’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you,’ then she told him the whole incident. He said: ‘So it was your shadow that I saw ahead of me?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ Then he gave me such a pat on my chest that it hurt me and said: ‘Do you think that Allah and His Messenger would wrong you?’ Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: ‘No matter how much a matter is hidden from people, Allah knows it well.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘Yes.’ Then he said: ‘Jibril (peace be upon him) came to me when you saw me, but he could not enter in front of you because you had removed your clothes. He called me and concealed himself from you. I responded to him and concealed it from you (i.e., spoke softly), and I thought you had fallen asleep, so I did not think it appropriate to wake you. And I feared that you might feel lonely in solitude. So he (Jibril) instructed me to go to the people of Baqi’ and seek forgiveness for them.’ Hajjaj bin Muhammad narrated the chain in the opposite manner «عن ابن جریج ، عن ابن ابی ملیکۃ ، عن محمد بن قیس».

Muhammad bin Qais bin Makhramah says that he heard Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) say: Shall I not relate to you an incident of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and myself? We said: Why not? She said: On the night it was my turn, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was with me. He returned from ‘Isha, placed his shoes by his feet, put down his cloak, and spread his lower garment on the bed. After only a short while, when he thought I had fallen asleep, he quietly put on his shoes, gently took his cloak, slowly opened the door, went out, and softly closed it. I also put my head covering on my head, wrapped myself in my cloak, put on my lower garment, and followed behind him until he came to the Baqi’ cemetery. There, he raised his hands three times, stood for a long time, then turned back, so I also turned back. He walked quickly, so I walked quickly. Then he increased his pace, so I increased mine. Then he began to run, so I also began to run, and I overtook him and entered (the house), and I had just lain down when he entered and said: “What is the matter, Aisha! Why is your belly heaving, why are you out of breath? Tell me, or the Subtle and All-Aware (i.e., Allah) will inform me.” I said: O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, and then I told him the whole incident. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “So it was your shadow that I saw ahead of me?” I said: Yes. Then he gave me such a tap on my chest that it hurt me and said: “Do you think that Allah and His Messenger would wrong you?” She said: No matter how much a matter is hidden from people, Allah will surely know it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Yes, (and) said: Jibreel came to me when you saw me, but he could not enter in front of you because you had removed your clothes. He called me and concealed himself from you. I responded to him and concealed it from you (i.e., spoke softly), and I thought you had fallen asleep, and I feared that you might feel lonely in solitude. So he (Jibreel) instructed me to go to the people of Baqi’ and seek forgiveness for them. ‘Asim narrated this hadith with different wording from Abdullah bin ‘Amir, and he from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).

With this chain also, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that at night the Prophet (peace be upon him) found me missing and then narrated the entire hadith.
