Chapter: Prohibition of Celibacy
Hadith 3214
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ ، قَالَ : " لَقَدْ رَدَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ التَّبَتُّلَ وَلَوْ أَذِنَ لَهُ لَاخْتَصَيْنَا " .
´Narrated Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas:` It was narrated that Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas said: "The Messenger of Allah forbade 'Uthman to be celibate. If he had given him permission we would have castrated ourselves."
Hadith 3215
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ ، عَنْ أَشْعَثَ ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى عَنِ التَّبَتُّلِ " .
´Narrated 'Aishah:` It was narrated from 'Aishah that the Messenger of Allah forbade celibacy.
Hadith 3216
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاق بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : أَنْبَأَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدُبٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ " نَهَى عَنِ التَّبَتُّلِ " , قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ : قَتَادَةُ أَثْبَتُ وَأَحْفَظُ مِنْ أَشْعَثَ , وَحَدِيثُ أَشْعَثَ أَشْبَهُ بِالصَّوَابِ ، وَاللَّهُ تَعَالَى أَعْلَمُ .
´Narrated Samurah bin Jundab:` It was narrated from Samurah bin Jundab that the Prophet forbade celibacy. Abu Abdur-Rahman said: Qatadah is more reliable and better preserves narrations than Ash'ath but the hadith of Ash'ath (here) appears to be the correct one. Allah, Most High, knows best.
Hadith 3217
أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُوسَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي رَجُلٌ شَابٌّ قَدْ خَشِيتُ عَلَى نَفْسِيَ الْعَنَتَ وَلَا أَجِدُ طَوْلًا أَتَزَوَّجُ النِّسَاءَ ، أَفَأَخْتَصِي ؟ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، حَتَّى قَالَ : ثَلَاثًا ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ جَفَّ الْقَلَمُ بِمَا أَنْتَ لَاقٍ ، فَاخْتَصِ عَلَى ذَلِكَ أَوْ دَعْ " ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ : الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ مِنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ , قَدْ رَوَاهُ يُونُسُ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ .
´Narrated Abu Salamah:` It was narrated from Abu Salamah that Abu Hurairah said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I am a young man and I fear hardship for myself, but I cannot afford to marry; should I castrate myself?'" The Prophet turned away from him until he said it three times. Then the Prophet said: "O Abu Hurairah, the pen is dried concerning what you are going to face, so (it is up to you whether) you castrate yourself or not." Abu Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasai) said: Al-Awzai did not hear this narration from Az-Zuhri, and this hadith is sahih, Yunus reported it from Az-Zuhri.
Hadith 3218
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْخَلَنْجِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حُصَيْنُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ الْمَازِنِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي الْحَسَنُ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ ، أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَكِ عَنِ التَّبَتُّلِ فَمَا تَرَيْنَ فِيهِ ؟ قَالَتْ : " فَلَا تَفْعَلْ أَمَا سَمِعْتَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ : وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ أَزْوَاجًا وَذُرِّيَّةً سورة الرعد آية 38 , فَلَا تَتَبَتَّلْ " .
´Narrated Sa'd bin Hisham:` It was narrated from Sa'd bin Hisham that he came to the Mother of the Believers, 'Aishah. He said: "I want to ask you about celibacy, what do you think about it?" She said: "Do not do that; have you not heard that Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, says: 'And indeed We sent Messengers before you, and made for them wives and offspring'? So do not be celibate."
Hadith 3219
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاق بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : أَنْبَأَنَا عَفَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، أَنَّ نَفَرًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ : لَا أَتَزَوَّجُ النِّسَاءَ ، وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ : لَا آكُلُ اللَّحْمَ ، وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ : لَا أَنَامُ عَلَى فِرَاشٍ ، وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ : أَصُومُ فَلَا أُفْطِرُ ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ ، وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ يَقُولُونَ كَذَا وَكَذَا ؟ لَكِنِّي أُصَلِّي ، وَأَنَامُ ، وَأَصُومُ ، وَأُفْطِرُ ، وَأَتَزَوَّجُ النِّسَاءَ ، فَمَنْ رَغِبَ عَنْ سُنَّتِي ، فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي " .
´Narrated Anas:` It was narrated from Anas that there was a group of the Companions of the Prophet, one of whom said: "I will not marry women." Another said: "I will not eat meat." Another said: "I will not sleep on a bed." Another said: "I will fast and not break my fast." News of that reached the Messenger of Allah and he praised Allah then said: "What is the matter with people who say such and such? But I pray and I sleep, I fast and I break my fast, and I marry women. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me."
