986. Commentary:
➊ This blessed hadith proves that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) led the Maghrib prayer as his last prayer during his lifetime, whereas in the Sahihayn, it is explicitly mentioned by Aisha (radi Allahu anha) regarding the Dhuhr prayer. See: [صحیح البخاري ، الأذان ، حدیث : 687 ، و صحیح مسلم ، الصلاة ، حدیث : 418]
There is no contradiction between these two narrations. The hadith in which Dhuhr prayer is mentioned means that he led the people in the mosque in the last Dhuhr prayer, and the aforementioned hadith means that due to illness, he led the women in the Maghrib prayer at home. See: [فتح الباري : 227/2 ، تحت حدیث : 687]
➋ The general practice in the Maghrib prayer is to recite short surahs, but if on some occasion a long recitation is done, there is nothing objectionable in it.
