´It was narrated from Ja'far bin Al-Muttalib bin Abi Wada'ah that:` His father said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited Surat An-Najm in Makkah and prostrated, and those who were with him prostrated. I raised my head and refused to prostrate." At that time Al-Muttalib had not yet accepted Islam.

959. Commentary:
➊ Imam Malik rahimahullah does not hold the view that there is a prostration (sajdah) in Surah An-Najm, even though here the wording is explicit «﴿فَاسْجُدُوا لِلَّهِ وَاعْبُدُوا﴾» [النجم 63 : 53]
➋ When you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) recited this surah, there were also polytheists (mushrikeen) present with you. They too performed prostration, because they did not refuse to prostrate to Allah, the Exalted. Later, when their leaders reproached them, saying that from a political standpoint this was not correct, they then fabricated a lie that Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had praised our idols. However, this is both rationally and textually far-fetched, and moreover, the narration regarding this is weak.
➌ From this blessed hadith, it is also established that performing ablution (wudu) is not necessary for the prostration of recitation (sajdah at-tilawah), because all those who were present with you performed prostration, even the polytheists performed prostration. And a polytheist is impure (najis); even if he performs ablution, he still remains impure. Thus, it is known that ablution is not necessary for the prostration of recitation, although it is better and more virtuous to be in a state of ablution.
