Hadith 954

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ قال : حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي عِمْرَانَ أَسْلَمَ ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ قال : اتَّبَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ رَاكِبٌ فَوَضَعْتُ يَدِي عَلَى قَدَمِهِ فَقُلْتُ : أَقْرِئْنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ سُورَةَ هُودٍ ، وَسُورَةَ يُوسُفَ ، فَقَالَ : " لَنْ تَقْرَأَ شَيْئًا أَبْلَغَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ " .
´It was narrated that Uqbah bin Amr said:` "I followed the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when he was riding, and I placed my hand on his foot and said : O Messenger of Allah, teach me Surah Hud and Surah Yusuf. He said: 'You will never recite anything greater before Allah than: "Say: I seek refuge with (Allah), the Lord of the daybreak." And "Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind.'"

954. Commentary: A beginner student should start with the shorter surahs, not with the longer ones. When ‘Uqbah bin ‘Amir radi Allahu anhu requested to be taught two long surahs at the very beginning—namely Surah Hud and Surah Yusuf—you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) guided that one should begin with the shorter surahs. The shorter surahs have their own virtue. Or, it is possible that the occasion was one of seeking refuge (isti‘adhah). It is evident that the relevance which the two surahs of seeking refuge (al-Mu‘awwidhatayn) have to this purpose is not possessed by any other surah.

Nasai — Hadith 5440
´It was narrated that 'Uqbah bin 'Amir said:` "I was walking with the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he said: "O 'Uqbah, say!' I said: 'What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?' He did not answer me, then h esaid: 'O 'Uqbah, say!' I said: 'What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?' But he did not answer me. I said: 'O Allah, make him answer me.' He said: 'O 'Uqbah, say!' I said: 'What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak...' So I recited it until I came to the end. Then he said: 'Say,' and I said: 'What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind...,' so I recited it until I came to the end. Then the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'No one who asks has ever asked by means of anything like them, and no one who seeks refuge has ever sought refuge with anything like them.'"

Urdu marginal note:
"He became silent"—The Prophet's (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) practice of stating something once and then becoming silent was intended to create eagerness and attentiveness in the heart of the listener, so that the importance of the forthcoming statement would become clear to him.

´It was narrated that 'Uqbah bin 'Amir said:` "I came to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] while he was riding, and I put my hand on his foot and said: 'Teach me Surah Hud, teach me Surah Yusuf. He said: 'You will never recite anything more precious before Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, than: 'Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak.'"
