Hadith 948

´It was narrated from Shabib Abi Rawh, from a man among the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ), that:` He prayed Subh and recited Ar-Rum, but he stumbled in his recitation. When he had finished praying he said: 'What is the matter with people who pray with us without purifying themselves properly? Those people make us stumble in reciting Quran.'"

948. Commentary:

➊ From this hadith, it is understood that the recitation (qira’ah) in the morning (Fajr) prayer should be lengthy, just as it is established from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and other noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) that in the morning prayer, Surah al-Mu’minun, Surah Yusuf, Surah Yunus, and Surah al-Kahf, etc., were recited.

➋ The effect of outward shortcomings also impacts the inner state. The spirituality of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was extremely exalted and subtle. Even the slightest impurity would be felt by him. In congregational prayer, the spiritual influence of the imam affects the followers, and the spiritual influence of the followers affects the imam, and they mutually influence one another, and this is clearly perceptible.

➌ Ablution (wudu) should be performed completely and with tranquility. If the ablution is incomplete, its effect falls upon the prayer. If any part remains dry, the prayer is not valid—even if an area as small as a fingernail remains dry, there is a severe warning regarding this.
