Hadith 876

´It was narrated from Abu Ishaq, that Asim bin Damrah said:` "I asked 'Ali bin Abi Talib about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) during the day before the prescribed prayers. He said: 'Who is able to do that?' Then he told us:'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to pray two Rak'ahs when the sun had passed its zenith, and four Rak'ahs before the middle of the day, with the Taslim at the end."'

876. Commentary:

➊ By "when the sun rises a little higher," it may be meant the Salat al-Ishraq, or it may be Salat al-Duha and Salat al-Awwabin. In this narration, it is explicitly stated that the salam was said at the end of four rak‘ahs, not after two rak‘ahs. And this is also permissible. And Allah knows best.

➋ Is there any difference between Salat al-Ishraq, Salat al-Duha, and Salat al-Awwabin (the forenoon prayer), or not? If there is, what is it? In reality, there is no difference between them. These are different names for the same voluntary prayer. When this supererogatory prayer is performed immediately after the time of dislike ends, when the sun has risen to the height of a spear or two spears, it is called Salat al-Ishraq. And the voluntary prayers performed after waiting for some time are referred to in the hadith as Salat al-Duha and Salat al-Awwabin.

However, the six voluntary rak‘ahs after Maghrib which are called Salat al-Awwabin, this is not correct, because that hadith is weak. And Allah knows best.

➌ From both of the aforementioned narrations, it is also established that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to perform an additional four rak‘ahs before midday, apart from Salat al-Ishraq and Salat al-Duha, etc.
