Hadith 875

´It was narrated from Abu Ishaq, that 'Asim bin Damrah said:` "We asked 'Ali about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said: 'Who among you could manage to do that?' We said: 'Even if we cannot do it, we still want to hear about it.' He said: 'When the sun reached the same height (in the east) as it reaches (in the west) at the time of 'Asr, he would pray two rak'ahs, and when the sun reached the same height (in the east) as it reaches (in the west) at the time for Zuhr he would pray four Rak'ahs. He would pray four Rak'ahs before Zuhr and two after, and he would pray four Rak'ahs before 'Asr, separating each two Rak'ahs with Taslim upon the angels who are close to Allah, and the prophets, and those who follow them of the believers and Muslims."'

Brief Explanation
1؎: That is, in the east.
2؎: That is, in the west.
3؎: That is, at the time of forenoon (chāshat), the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would perform two units (rak‘ah) of prayer.
4؎: By this is meant Salat al-Awwabin, which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to perform before the sun reached its zenith (zawāl).
5؎: There are narrations of both four units (rak‘ah) and two units before the noon (zuhr) prayer. There is no disagreement that both are permissible; sometimes one may do this and sometimes that. However, preferring the narration of four units is better, because it is established by a hadith in words (qawli hadith).
6؎: That is, he would separate (the prayers) by means of the tashahhud. The tashahhud is referred to as "taslim" here because it contains the phrase «السلام علينا وعلى عباده الله الصالحين».
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
875. Commentary:

➊ The first voluntary prayer refers to Salat al-Duha (the forenoon prayer). If this prayer is performed when the sun has risen to the height of a spear or two spears, it is called Salat al-Ishraq. In any case, Salat al-Ishraq, Salat al-Duha, and Salat al-Awwabeen are different names for the same prayer. These names differ only due to the change in timing. And Allah knows best. For details, see: [القول المقبول ، ص : 688]
And the second voluntary prayer refers to the Sunnah of Zawal, because it is performed before the sun begins to decline.

➋ The greeting (salam) here refers to reciting during the Tashahhud: «السَّلامُ علَينا و على عبادِ اللهِ الصّالحينَ» “Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah,” not the concluding salam at the end of the prayer. And the mention of angels, prophets, and others is an explanation of the term “the righteous.”

English Commentary:
1:
The meaning of separating by means of salam is that he used to perform the four rak‘ahs by offering them as two sets of two rak‘ahs each. The believers are called followers of the close angels because, like the angels, the believers also have faith in the oneness (tawhid) of Allah and His greatness.

Note:
(In the chain of narration, Abu Ishaq al-Sabi‘i is a mudallis, and the narration is with ‘an‘anah, but based on corroborating evidence, this hadith is authentic.)
