´Ubay bin Ka'b said:` "One day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed Fajr, then he said: 'Did so-and-so attend the prayer? They said: 'No.' He said: '(What about) so-and-so? They said:'No' He said: 'These two prayers. are the most burdensome for the hypocrites. If they knew what (virtue) there is in them, they would come, even if they had to crawl. And the virtue of the first row is like that of the row of the angels. If you knew its virtue, you would compete for it. A man's prayer with another man is greater in reward than his prayer alone. And a man's prayer with two other men is greater in reward than his prayer with one other man; the more people there are, the more beloved that is to Allah, the Mighty and Sublime."'
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
844. Commentary:
➊ It is understood from this that the attendance of worshippers after the prayer can be ascertained.
➋ The ‘Isha and Fajr prayers are burdensome for the hypocrites because of the dominance of sleep. To forsake sleep and comfort is only possible through the strength of faith, and they do not possess this quality. They come to the mosque only for show. These two prayers are in darkness; there is no ostentation in them, thus they do not come at all. In any case, they have no real longing (for the prayer).
➌ “Like the rows of the angels.” That is, it is superior and its reward is greater. From this it is established that the rows of the angels are superior to the rows of humans.
➍ “The more numerous they are.” It is understood from this that the prayer in the congregational mosque (jami‘ masjid) is superior to the prayer in the neighborhood mosque. Therefore, if someone goes to the larger mosque for the sake of reward, he may do so.

554. Commentary:
➊ For the purpose of training and admonition, the attendance of those performing prayer can be recorded.
➋ It is a human weakness that one endures every kind of hardship for worldly and immediate benefits. A Muslim should keep his focus on the Hereafter. If rewards are given to young children for encouragement and motivation, it is also permissible. Similarly, arranging food and the like at preaching gatherings can increase people's interest.
➌ Although there is greater reward due to the larger number of attendees in a big mosque, if preference is given to a nearby mosque with the intention of enlivening it, then insha Allah there will be great virtue in that as well.
