´It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin 'Umar said:` "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to enjoin upon us to make the prayer short, but he would lead us in prayer and recite As-Saffat."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
827. Commentary: The imam should take the followers (muqtadis) into consideration. People used to pray behind the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam with great eagerness. There was no fear of their hearts becoming constricted or of weariness, so he would lead long prayers. However, even then, if he heard a child crying, he would shorten the prayer. Every imam should lead the prayer according to the condition of his followers, but the performance of the pillars (arkan) must be correct. There should be tranquility and composure in the prayer. Only the recitation (qira’ah), glorifications (tasbihat), and supplications (ad‘iyah) may be shortened.
