Hadith 809

´It was narrated that Qais bin 'Ubad said:` "While I was in the Masjid in the first row, a man pulled me from behind and moved me aside, and took my place. By Allah, I could not focus on my prayer, then when he left I saw that it was Ubayy bin Ka'b. He said: '0 boy, may Allah protect you from harm. This is what the Prophet instructed us to do, to stand directly behind him.' Then he (Ubayy) turned to face the Qiblah and said: 'Doomed are Ah1 Al-'Uqd, by the Lord of the Ka'bah! - three times.'Then he said: 'By Allah, I am not sad for them, but I am sad for the people whom they have misled.' I said: '0 Abu Ya'qub, what do you mean by Ah1 Al-'Uqd?' He said: 'The rulers."'

Explanation & Benefits

809. Commentary: It is understood from this that if a child or a person of unsound mind stands in the first row, he should be gently and lovingly moved back so that a sensible, elderly person can take his place. However, it is not correct for elders to remain seated at the back of the congregation and, when the row is being completed and people are about to begin the prayer, to start pulling the youth away. This not only causes hurt feelings but also leads to disorder. Occasionally, if a respected elder of knowledge and virtue, whom everyone honors, happens to be left behind, he may stand in the place of a child. Obviously, in view of the respect for such an elder, neither will the child’s feelings be hurt nor will there be any quarrel. Not everyone holds this status. Ubayy ibn Ka‘b radi Allahu anhu was the leader of the reciters, whom even a great and awe-inspiring caliph like ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu respected. Then see how lovingly he explained, so that the concerned person’s displeasure was dispelled.
