Hadith 750

´Narrated Abdullah bin Umar:` It was narrated from Abdullah bin Umar that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered the Ka'bah with Usamah bin Zaid, Bilal and Uthman bin Talha al Hajabi, and locked the door behind him. Abdullah bin Umar said: "I asked Bilal when he came out: " What did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) do?" He said: "He stood with one pillar to his left, two pillars to his right and three pillars behind him - at that time the House stood on six pillars - and he prayed with approximately three forearm's length between him and the wall."

750. Commentary:

➊ Uthman bin Talhah radi Allahu anhu was the custodian and doorkeeper of the Ka'bah. The keys to the Ka'bah were in his possession. He belonged to the Banu Abd al-Dar clan. This family had held the office of custodianship (doorkeeping) of the Ka'bah since the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah). After the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam maintained them in this position, and to this day, the same family continues to fulfill this responsibility. Uthman bin Talhah is therefore referred to as "Hajibi" (the custodian).

➋ Nowadays, there are no pillars inside the Ka'bah.

➌ One hand-span is one and a half feet. Three hand-spans are approximately four and a half feet. The usual row for prostration (sujud) is four or four and a half feet, which means that the place of your prostration would be very close to the wall. Therefore, the sutrah (barrier) should be almost adjacent to the place of prostration. In some ahadith, the distance between the place of prostration and the sutrah is mentioned as being enough for a goat to pass through. It is evident that a goat can pass through a narrow space and does not require much room. For further benefits, see Hadith: 693.
