بَابُ : الْقَدْرِ الَّذِي يَكْتَفِي بِهِ الرَّجُلُ مِنَ الْمَاءِ لِلْوُضُوءِChapter: The Amount Of Water Sufficient For A Man's Wudu'
Hadith 74

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قال : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ ، ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ كَلِمَةً مَعْنَاهَا ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ حَبِيبٍ ، قال : سَمِعْتُ عَبَّادَ بْنَ تَمِيمٍ ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ جَدَّتِي وَهِيَ أُمُّ عُمَارَةَ بِنْتُ كَعْبٍ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " تَوَضَّأَ فَأُتِيَ بِمَاءٍ فِي إِنَاءٍ قَدْرَ ثُلُثَيِ الْمُدِّ " . قَالَ شُعْبَةُ : فَأَحْفَظُ أَنَّهُ غَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ وَجَعَلَ يَدْلُكُهُمَا وَيَمْسَحُ أُذُنَيْهِ بَاطِنَهُمَا " . وَلَا أَحْفَظُ أَنَّهُ مَسَحَ ظَاهِرَهُمَا .
´It was narrated from Shu'bah that Habib said:` "I heard 'Abbad bin Tamim narrate from my grandmother - who was Umm 'Umarah bint Ka'b - that the Prophet (ﷺ) performed Wudu', and he was brought a vessel in which there were two-thirds of a Mudd." Shu'bah said: "I remember that he washed his forearms and started rubbing them, and he wiped the inside of his ear, but I do not remember whether he wiped the outside of them."

74. Commentary: In the first narration, the mention was of performing ablution (wudu) with one mudd of water. In this narration, there is mention of performing ablution with even less than one mudd of water, from which it is understood that this quantity will also vary according to different individuals and circumstances. There is no fixed limit prescribed in this regard, as is established from the practice of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: sometimes he would use less water and sometimes more. However, it is necessary to avoid extravagance.
