´It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:` "When the Mu'adhdhin called the Adhan, some of the Companions of the Prophet (S.A.W) would get up and rush to the pillars (in the Masjid) and pray until the Prophet (S.A.W) came out and they were like that. They would pray before Maghrib and there was nothing between the Adhan and Iqamah."

683. Commentary:
➊ They would face the pillars so that they could use them as a sutrah (barrier), because when a person is praying alone, it is necessary to have a sutrah in front of him. If it is a congregational prayer, then only the imam needs to have a sutrah in front of him.
➋ When you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would arrive, they would be in this state, meaning they would be performing voluntary prayers (nawafil), but you would not prohibit them. This is called a tacit Sunnah (sunnah taqririyyah), meaning you approved of this action and did not stop them.
➌ “There was not much distance.” There was also no need for much time to perform two rak‘ahs. By the time the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) arrived, they would be almost finished.
