Hadith 665

´It was narrated that Mu'awiyah bin Hudaij that the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) prayed one day and said the Taslim when there was still a Rak'ah left of the prayer. A man caught up with him and said:` 'You forgot a Rak'ah of the prayer!' So he came back into the Masjid and told Bilal to call the Iqamah for prayer, then he led the people in praying one Rak'ah. I told the people about that and they said to me: 'Do you know who that man was?' I said: 'No, not unless I see him.'. Then he passed by me and I said: 'This is he.' They said: 'This is Talha bin 'Ubaidullah.'"

665. Commentary:

➊ The situation appears to be that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), after concluding the prayer with salam, left the mosque. Talhah (radi Allahu anhu) went and informed him. Since there had been a distance, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had a new iqamah called so that the worshippers could gather, although it can also be said that he had not left the mosque; in that case, what is meant by "entering the mosque" is returning to the place of prayer. Linguistically, this can also be referred to as the mosque. However, the first explanation is more appropriate and closer to the apparent meaning of the hadith.

➋ The Hanafis hold that in this situation the prayer becomes invalid and must be performed again from the beginning, and they interpret this hadith as pertaining to the early period (of Islam), but this view is without evidence. And Allah knows best.

When people become misaligned in the rows, either ahead or behind, and later become aware of this mistake, then the takbir should be proclaimed for both the prayer and the arrangement of the rows.
