618. Commentary: Some scholars have deduced from this narration that if a prayer is missed (qada), then after performing its qada today, it must again be performed as qada at its original time the next day. However, this deduction is weak because the missed prayer is to be made up (qada) only once. This is supported by other generalities and evidences. For example: «فَلْيُصَلِّها إِذا ذَكَرَها» — that is, in the case of sleep or forgetfulness, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded to perform only that missed prayer upon remembering, and said nothing further. In some narrations it is stated: «لا كَفّارَةَ لَها إِلّا ذلكَ» “Its only expiation is this.” This hadith is exclusive, meaning there is no need to perform anything further. Furthermore, upon deeper reflection, it also comes to mind that only five prayers are strictly obligatory in a day and night; if one were to perform its qada again the next day, they would become six, which is contrary to the universally accepted principle of the religion. Therefore, it is necessary to interpret it in such a way that all evidences are reconciled. Moreover, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has also negated the repetition of qada for the same prayer the next day, as is evident from the following chapter heading: «باب من نسی صلاة فلیصل إذا ذکرھا ، ولا یعید إلا تلک الصلاة» Therefore, in light of these observations, the reasoning presented by Imam Nasa’i rahimahullah in the chapter heading is questionable. As for the explicit narration regarding repeating the qada, in which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam gave this command: «فمَن أَدْرَكَ منكم صلاةَ الغَداةِ من غَدٍ صالِحًا فلْيَقْضِ معها مِثْلَها» “Therefore, whoever among you attains the morning prayer in a state of well-being tomorrow, let him perform another prayer like it along with it.” [ضعیف سنن أبي داود للألباني ، حدیث : 438]
— this narration is rare (shadh) and not a valid proof. The correct meaning of this narration is that tomorrow you should perform the prayer at its proper time, and not delay it as you did today; that is, one should not develop the habit of praying late.
