Hadith 594

أَخْبَرَنَا الْمُؤَمَّلُ بْنُ إِهَابٍ ، قال : حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْجَارِيُّ ، قال : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قال : " غَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمَكَّةَ ، فَجَمَعَ بَيْنَ الصَّلَاتَيْنِ بِسَرِفَ " .
´It was narrated that Jabir said:` "The sun set when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was in Makkah, and he joined the two prayers in Sarif.: [1] [1] A valley about 12 km northeast of Makkah on the way to Al-Madinah.
Brief Explanation
1؎: Sarf is a place located ten miles from Makkah. Covering such a distance after sunset is evidence that this was not a notional (surī) combining of prayers, but a real (haqīqī) one, and that the prayer was performed after the disappearance of the twilight (shafaq).

594. Commentary: Sarf is a place that is ten miles away from Makkah Mukarramah. It is evident that covering such a distance within the time of Maghrib is not possible; therefore, this is necessarily a case of delayed combining (jam‘ ta’khir), which is undoubtedly permissible during travel.
