´It was narrated that Ibn Shubrumah said:` "Talhah said to the people of Al-Kufah concerning Nabidh: 'It is a test whereby a young man may benefit but an old man may be harmed.' If there was a wedding among them, Talhah and Zubaid would offer milk and honey to drink. It was said to Talhah: 'Why don't you offer Nabidh?' He said: 'I would not like a Muslim to become intoxicated because of me.'"

Urdu marginal note:
➊ "It is a trial (fitnah)." The intent is that the people of Kufa are very enamored with nabidh. Whether children or elders, all of them drink it, and they drink it excessively. To the extent that they do not even distinguish between what is intoxicating and what is not. Another possible meaning is that nabidh has both benefit and harm. For the young and for children, it is beneficial, as it aids their growth and increases their strength, but for older people it is harmful, because it causes them to age quickly and increases their senility, until they become decrepit old men. Since it contains both benefit and harm, it has been called a trial (fitnah).
➋ "Becomes intoxicated." Because nabidh can produce intoxication. It is possible that before drinking, one may not realize that it has become intoxicating. After drinking, it becomes apparent that intoxication had developed in it. In this way, one may unknowingly consume something intoxicating. Instead, those beverages should be consumed in which there is no possibility of intoxication.
