Hadith 5759

أَخْبَرَنَا سُوَيْدُ , قَالَ : أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ , عَنْ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ , عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ , عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ , قَالَ : " أَحْدَثَ النَّاسُ أَشْرِبَةً مَا أَدْرِي مَا هِيَ , وَمَا لِي شَرَابٌ مُنْذُ عِشْرِينَ سَنَةً إِلَّا الْمَاءُ وَاللَّبَنُ وَالْعَسَلُ " .
´It was narrated that 'Abidah said:` "The people have invented drinks and I do not know what they are. I have not drunk anything for 20 years except water, milk and honey."

It is not unlikely that both of these eminent personalities were stating their own respective practices—that we have never consumed any doubtful beverage at all. And it is possible that the intention of the Imam, by mentioning the narrations, is that some narrators have attributed this statement to Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu anhu, and some to ‘Ubaydah rahimahullah. «والله أعلم»
