Hadith 5757

´It was narrated from Sa'eed bin 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abza that his father said:` "I asked Ubayy bin Ka'b about Nabidh, and he said: 'Drink water, drink honey, drink Sawiq (barley gruel) and drink milk that you have been nourished with since childhood.' I repeated the question and he said: 'Is it wine you want? Is it wine you want?'"

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) The intent of Hazrat Ubayy bin Ka'b radi Allahu anhu was that nabidh (fermented drink) is of various kinds—both intoxicating and plain. If I tell you to drink nabidh, there is a risk that you might end up drinking the intoxicating kind, because sometimes a mild intoxication is not even felt. People also tend to become negligent in such matters; therefore, for the common person, it is better to abstain from it. Hazrat Ubayy bin Ka'b radi Allahu anhu considered intoxicating nabidh to be the same as wine, and this is the correct view.

(2) The verifier of the book declares the hadith absolutely weak due to the 'an'anah (narration with "from") of Sufyan Thawri rahimahullah, whereas according to other scholars, even his narrations with 'an'anah are considered authentic because he was minimally prone to tadlis (concealing the directness of transmission). Furthermore, there is no contradiction in the ahadith narrated from him of this type. Therefore, the narrations that have been declared weak due to Sufyan Thawri's 'an'anah are, in our view, authentic.
