´'Ubaidullah bin Sa'eed said:` "I heard Abu Usamah say: 'I never saw any man more assiduous in seeking knowledge than 'Abdullah bin Al-Mubarak, not in Ash-Sham, Egypt, Yemen or the Hijaz.'"
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) Imam al-Nasa’i rahimahullah’s intention is to highlight the eminence and scholarly stature of Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak rahimahullah, so that the aforementioned statement of Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak is not considered unsubstantiated. He was a great and meticulous scholar. And his statement is one hundred percent correct: except for Ibrahim al-Nakha’i rahimahullah, there is no report with a chain of transmission from any Companion or Tabi’i permitting intoxicating nabidh. Therefore, this is a major error on their part «. . . . . . .».
(2) In the region of al-Sham, the Arabic word «شامات» was used for this, meaning that “al-Sham” is plural while the other regions are singular, because al-Sham was a very vast province in which many regions were found.
