Hadith 5753

´It was narrated that Ibn Shubrumah said:` "May Allah have mercy on Ibrahim. Other scholars had strict views on Nabidh but he was lenient."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) From this narration (contrary to previous narrations), it is established that the position of Ibrahim al-Nakha’i rahimahullah regarding intoxicating wine was the same as that of the general Hanafi scholars: that it is permissible to drink it in small amounts as long as it does not intoxicate. However, it should be noted that the narrator of this narration is the same Ibn Shubrumah who has also narrated a report of similar meaning from Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma (see narration: 5689), which Imam al-Nasa’i rahimahullah has declared weak. Therefore, this narration also cannot be considered reliable, especially when those who take a strict stance are among the Companions and the Followers (Tabi‘in), and the authentic hadiths are also in agreement with them. And if Ibrahim rahimahullah considered it permissible to drink a small amount of intoxicating nabidh (fermented drink)—as is also apparent from forthcoming narrations—then his statement holds no weight in comparison to the Companions and the majority of the Followers, especially when authentic hadiths are also contrary to this view. The details have already been mentioned in previous hadiths.

(2) “May Allah have mercy.” These words are an expression of regret, not praise, because Ibn Shubrumah himself did not consider such a drink permissible, as will be mentioned ahead. [ديكهيے حديث: 5761]
