1؎: That is, in the previous narrations regarding Umar radi Allahu anhu, it is mentioned that he made a face (i.e., showed dislike) upon drinking this beverage, then eliminated its intoxicating effect with water and drank it. For he had imposed the prescribed punishment (hadd) for drinking wine upon his own son, Ubaydullah, even when intoxication had not occurred—so how could he himself eliminate the intoxication of an intoxicating beverage with water and then drink it?

In this, water was mixed due to the sourness, not because of intoxication, just as vinegar is sour. There is a great difference between sourness and intoxication; otherwise, vinegar would also be unlawful. Such sour nabidh was drunk for digestion, like vinegar. Furthermore, according to the preferred opinion, this narration is authentic, as Imam al-Nasa’i rahimahullah has also indicated.
